Elk Environmental Services, a division of Empire Group in Reading, PA, is looking for a few students to participate in their summer internship program. Students will gain hands-on experience and make valuable connections in the environmental services field. It runs for the course of summer break Monday through Friday 8 AM – 5 PM with potential for overtime. The pay rate is $12-$15 an hour.
Qualifications:
- Current student or 2024 graduate looking for an excellent internship opportunity.
- Student should be looking to pursue a career in environmental services or chemistry.
- Must be able to commute to our Reading, PA office daily for the duration of the summer internship; this position is not remote.
Job Tasks:
- Ensure that Health and Safety is number one priority by complying with all safe work practices, policies, and processes and always acting in a safe manner.
- Directly interfaces with clients to ensure customer satisfaction by understanding each customer’s specific disposal and packaging requirements.
- Administrative tasks and paperwork as it relates to transportation of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes (packing lists, waste characterization forms, land disposal restriction forms, manifests, etc.).
- Research customer inventory: profile and characterize hazardous and non-hazardous waste according to RCRA and DOT regulations and obtain MSDSs and samples as necessary to facilitate appropriate disposal approval.
- Coordinate with outside laboratories for sample analysis.
- Prepare manifests and supporting documents for waste transportation and disposal in accordance with RCRA, State, and DOT regulations.
- Maintain database to track disposal information including customer, generator, job number, type and amount of waste, disposal facility, manifest number, ID number, and approval number.
- Provide technical assistance and pricing to Sales staff and customers as necessary.
- Assist in coordinating truck scheduling for pick-ups and deliveries with Sales, Dispatch, and Field Services.
- Maintain stock of manifests, labels, DOT boxes, and any other supplies necessary for the disposal process.
- Be able to do “field” work up to 20% of the time. Characterize, segregate, pack, label, and prepare waste drums for pick up and transportation from customer locations.
- Maintain database to track disposal information including customer, generator, job number, type and amount of waste, disposal facility, manifest number, ID number, approval number, and delivery dates.
- Perform miscellaneous tasks required by the Technical Manager.
