NEW ANSI Standards
- Elk Environmental Services
…for Aerial Lifts, Scissor Lifts, Stock Pickers, and Boom Lifts
With a nearing new year comes compliance cut off dates for new standards from ANSI, OSHA, EPA, DOT, and more. If you work in general industry or construction these standards may affect you and your employees in multiple ways.
ANSI, in December 2018, released some new standards.
First, what is “ANSI”?
ANSI is the American National Standards Institute. ANSI provides the power to help regulate standards in almost every industry in the US. ANSI acts as the go-between from consumers to government, companies, and organizations. This enables people to have the power to make changes to standards that affect everyone, when normally they may not have the ability to get in front of these groups to induce change. Thanks to ANSI, standards in hundreds of work environments continually change to make teams and individuals safer every day.
Secondly, let’s talk acronyms.
Goodbye “AWP” (Aerial Work Platforms)
Hello, “MEWP” (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms)
*notable: MEWPs can also fall into 3 different groups, according to the distance in which they extend.
ANSI Standard A92.22 – Safe Use
All MEWP users, including both full-time owners and companies who rent aerial equipment, must develop a risk assessment and site safety plan. The plan must be documented and shared with everyone on the work site.
Call us to help you develop your risk and site safety plan for MEWP operation, planning, and communication.
ANSI Standard A92.24 – Training
The new standard now requires training for both occupants and supervisors. Operators are now required to familiarize themselves with the new MEWP categories and information, rather than only supervisors.

ANSI A92 also includes new design standards, so be sure to check your currently owned, rented, or rentable equipment for any design changes. Existing equipment does not need to be rebuilt to fit the new standards, but all newly manufactured equipment does need to meet the requirements. These new changes touch on load limit, tilt, and wind speed sensors, tire types for different environments, railing heights, and more!
Don’t delay! All owners, operators, and supervisors must be ANSI compliant by December 10th 2019.
Don’t fall out of compliance…
